As you know, we have been coordinating the installation of a well and irrigation system at the Northwest Elementary Fields.
I am very pleased to announce that the work is complete, and we now have the ability to keep those fields irrigated, which will reduce the amount of dust that is generated on them.
It will also allow us to fill those “pesky” outfield holes that seem to pop up each season, with dirt and grass, and keep the outfields in better shape than we have been able to in the past.
Our irrigation system consists of a newly dug well, which was installed by Keller Well Drilling.
The well was dug about 70 feet down, and is capable of producing 25 gallons per minute at 50 PSI.
Our irrigation system was designed and installed by Dennie Peters, a HAJBA coach that grew up, playing baseball, on the Northwest fields when he was younger.
We were blessed that Dennie “Stepped up” and agreed to take on the irrigation project, and see it through to completion.
We ran one “coupler” to the middle of each infield, behind the mound area, that will be capable of covering the entire infield area. Each coupler is contained inside of an irrigation box, and is underground.
When it comes time to water a field, we have a “key” with a sprinkler head on it that we can lock into the “coupler”. And once the field has been watered, this “key” will be removed and taken to the next field that needs to be watered.
We will also have the option of connecting a hose and sprinkler to the coupler if we decide we would like to water the outfield as well.
In the future, if our finances allow, we could eventually run irrigation piping to the outfields as well, to have a more “complete” irrigation system in place.
As I have said many times before, our programs cannot exist without “people that care”, and Dennie Peters is yet another example of a “Dad” in the community that cares.
The total cost for the irrigation system at Northwest was $15, 028.
This cost is made up of $6735 for the installation of the well and related items, and $8293 for the installation and materials for the irrigation system.
These are your HAJBA registration dollars “at work” to improve the facilities used by the children in our community.
As I have said before, I’m proud to be the President of the Howell Area Junior Baseball Association, and consider myself blessed to be able to “work” with so many great volunteers that are willing to give so much of their time to ensure that our kids have “top notch” programs to participate in.
If you happen to know any of the HAJBA board members, or volunteers that make our programs what they are, please take the time to thank them for their contribution to HAJBA and the kids in the community.
