Tournament Baseball Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1:

What is Tournament baseball?   

Answer: Tournament baseball is a team comprised of players and coaches currently playing in HAJBA. These players were required to try out for the team.  HAJBA formed tournament teams are called the “Highlanders”.     

Question 2:

How do I know if my child should try out for the tournament team?

Answer: If your family enjoys competitive baseball at a higher level and your child/player is typically one of the better kids on their team, then Tournament baseball may be for you.     

Question 3:

How much does it cost?   

Answer: Tournament baseball usually costs $300 per child depending on how many tournaments the team decides to play in.  This includes tournament registration and uniform costs.  Overnight stay is sometimes needed depending on how far away the tournament is.  All fees are over and above the cost of HAJBA’s registration fee.  If your child is chosen to be on a tournament team, you will be asked to provide a $300 check made out to “HAJBA” prior to the first tournament team practice.

How far away are the tournaments from Howell?   

Answer: All tournaments are usually within 2 driving hours from Howell.   

Question 5:

When do tryouts and tournaments take place?   

Answer: Tryouts are held in August/September for the upcoming season. Tournaments are Friday – Sunday.  Most tournament teams participate in 3 to 4 tournaments a year from May through July.  . Most tournaments guarantee 3 games during the weekend with winners moving on to semi-finals and finals on Sundays.

When are practices?   

Answer: Practices usually take place during the weekend to prepare for upcoming tournaments.     

Question 7:

Does every age have a tournament team?

Answer: No, teams are formed when a current qualified in-house coach is willing to dedicate their time to coach a second team, and enough kids show up for the tryouts to enable us to form a competitive team. Tournament teams begin at 8U and go up to 15U.     

Question 8:

What does 8U mean?

Answer: 8U means 8 years old or under.  To play in 8U the player may not turn 9 years

old by May 1 . The same birthdate cut off of May 1 applies for all ages.

Question 9:

Is the End Of Season HAJBA Tournament one of the tournaments?

Answer: No. This is a separate tournament that the Highlanders do not participate in.  All players play with their regular in-house team for this tournament.
